The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 6:48 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Dennis Glen Patterson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Dyck, Enverga, Moore, Ngo, Patterson, Raine, Tannas and Wallace (9).

In attendance: Martha Butler, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, the committee continued its consideration of Bill C-428, An Act to amend the Indian Act (publication of by-laws) and to provide for its replacement.

Joe Wild, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Treaties and Aboriginal Government;

Nathalie Nepton, Director, Governance Policy and Implementation Directorate, Treaties and Aboriginal Government;

Line Paré, Director General, Settlement Agreement Operations, Resolution and Individual Affairs Sector;

Kris Johnson, Senior Director, Lands Modernization, Lands and Economic Development Sector;

Chris Rainer, Director, Strategic Policy and Planning Directorate — Education Branch, Education and Social Development Programs and Partnerships Sector.

Department of Justice Canada:

Martin Reiher, Acting General Counsel and Acting Director.

Mr. Peach made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Wild, Ms. Nepton, Ms. Paré, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Rainer and Mr. Reiher answered questions.

At 8:45 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
