The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met this day at 10:30 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Irving Gerstein, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bellemare, Black, Gerstein, Greene, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Maltais, Massicotte, Tannas and Unger (9).

In attendance: Adriane Yong and Michaël Lambert-Racine, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, the committee continued its study on the use of digital currency. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 6.)

WITNESSES:

Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC):

Bernard Gagné, Deputy Chief Compliance Officer, Compliance Relations and Support;

Martin Tabi, Manager, Research and Strategic Intelligence and International Relationships.

Department of Finance Canada:

Lisa Pezzack, Director, Financial Sector, Financial Sector Policy Branch;

Ian Wright, Chief, Financial Crimes - Domestic, Financial Sector Policy Branch.

Ms. Pezzack and Mr. Tabi each made a statement and, together with Mr. Wright and Mr. Gagné, answered questions.

At 11:58 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
