The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 11:05 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Cordy, Eaton, Eggleton, P.C., Lang, Nancy Ruth, Ogilvie, Seidman, Seth and Stewart Olsen (10).

In attendance: Sonya Norris and Julie Béchard, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, the committee continued to examine the subject matter of Bill C-24, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Chris Alexander, P.C., M.P., Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.

WITNESSES:

Citizenship and Immigration Canada:

Catrina Tapley, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic and Program Policy;

Nicole Girard, Director General, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Branch;

Alexandra Hiles, Acting Director, Citizenship Program Delivery and Promotion.

Justice Canada:

Mory Afshar, Senior Counsel, Team Leader.

The chair made a statement.

The Minister made a statement and, together with Ms. Tapley, Ms. Girard and Ms. Hiles, answered questions.

At 12:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
