The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:46 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Eggleton, P.C., Enverga, Frum, Merchant, Nancy Ruth, Ogilvie, Raine, Seidman, Stewart Olsen and Wallace (11).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Moore (1).
In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on February 18, 2015, the committee began its consideration of Bill C-247, An Act to provide that the Department of Employment and Social Development is the main point of contact with the Government of Canada in respect of the death of a Canadian citizen or resident.
WITNESSES:
Frank Valeriote, Member of Parliament for Guelph, sponsor of the bill.
Employment and Social Development Canada:
Anik Dupont, Director General, Identity Policy and Program Directorate;
Robert Frelich, Director, Identity Policy and Program Directorate.
Funeral Service Association of Canada:
Jim Bishop, Chair of the Government Relations Committee.
Canadian Association of Retired Persons:
Janet Gray, Chair, CARP Ottawa.
The chair made a statement.
Mr. Valeriote made a statement and answered questions.
At 5 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 5:02 p.m., the committee resumed.
Ms. Gray and Mr. Bishop each made a statement and, together with Ms. Dupont and Mr. Frelich, answered questions.
At 5:35 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
