The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 6:47 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Dennis Dawson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Dawson, Demers, Eggleton, P.C., Furey, Greene, Housakos, MacDonald, Plett and Verner, P.C. (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Hervieux-Payette, P.C. (1).

In attendance: Terrence Thomas, Dara Lithwick and Alexandre Lavoie, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; Mona Ishack, Communications Officer, Senate Communications Directorate.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 8, 2014, the committee began its consideration of the Bill S-4, An Act to amend the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act and to make a consequential amendment to another Act.

APPEARING:

The Honourable James Moore, P.C., M.P., Minister of Industry.

WITNESSES:

Industry Canada:

John Knubley, Deputy Minister;

Lawrence Hanson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Spectrum, Information Technologies and Telecommunications.

The minister made a statement and, together with Mr. Hanson and Mr. Knubley, answered questions.

At 7:38 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 7:44 p.m., the committee resumed and pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, the committee continued its consideration of the subject-matter of those elements contained in Divisions 15, 16 and 28 of Part 6 of Bill C-31, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 11, 2014 and other measures. City of Montreal:

The Honourable Denis Coderre, P.C., Mayor.

Mr. Coderre and Ms. St-Hilaire each made a statement and together answered questions.

At 8:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
