The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met this day at 6:45 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Anne C. Cools, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Cools, Eaton, Marshall, Mitchell, Mockler, Neufeld, Pratte and Smith (10).

In attendance: Alex Smith and Sylvain Fleury, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, the committee began its examination of the Supplementary Estimates (B) for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2017. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 16.)

Richard Botham, Assistant Deputy Minister, Economic Development and Corporate Finance Branch;

Leah Anderson, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Financial Sector Policy Branch;

Miodrag Jovanovic, Director General, Tax Policy Branch;

Tom McGirr, Chief, Equalization and TFF Policy, Federal-Provincial Relations Division, Federal-Provincial Relations and Social Policy Branch.

Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC):

Mark Perlman, Chief Financial Officer;

Jason Won, Deputy Chief Financial Officer;

Paul Thompson, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Skills and Employment Branch.

Linda Hurdle, Chief Financial Administrative Officer.

Mr. Meyers made a statement and, together with Ms. Anderson, Mr. Botham, Mr. McGirr and Mr. Jovanovic, answered questions.

At 7:29 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 7:35 p.m., the committee resumed, the chair, the Honourable Larry Smith, presiding.

Mr. Perlman and Mr. Cautillo each made statements and, together with Mr. Won, Mr. Thompson and Ms. Hurdle, answered questions.

At 8:53 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
