The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met this day at 9:31 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Percy Mockler presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cools, Eaton, Forest, Marshall, Marwah, Mockler, Moncion, Neufeld, Oh and Pratte (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Stewart Olsen (1).

In attendance: Sylvain Fleury and Olivier Leblanc-Laurendeau, analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, the committee continued its study on the financial implications and regional considerations of Canada's aging population on the public purse. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No 26.)

WITNESSES:

The Honourable Sharon Carstairs, P.C., former senator.

Medavie:

Bernard Lord, Chief Executive Officer.

Statistics Canada:

Laurent Martel, Director, Demography Division.

Ms. Carstairs and Mr. Lord each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 10:59 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:02 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Martel made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 11:27 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
