Pursuant to the order of the Senate of March 30, 2021, the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met by videoconference this day at 4:38 p.m. [ET], the chair, the Honourable Chantal Petitclerc, presiding. This meeting is considered to have taken place in the parliamentary precinct.

Members of the committee present by videoconference: The Honourable Senators Black (Ontario), Bovey, Dasko, Forest-Niesing, Frum, Kutcher, Mégie, Moodie, Petitclerc and Simons (10).

Participating in the meeting: François Michaud, Procedural Clerk, Lori Meldrum and Elda Donnelly, Administrative Assistants, Committees Directorate; Laura Blackmore and Laura Munn-Rivard, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 27, 2021, the committee began its examination on Bill C-220, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (bereavement leave).

WITNESSES (by videoconference):

Matt Jeneroux, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Riverbend, sponsor of the bill.

Heart and Stroke Foundation:

Patrice Lindsay, Director, Health Systems Change;

Matthew Musgrave, Specialist, Government Relations and Public Engagement - Canada.

Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada:

Julie Kelndorfer, Director, Government and Community Relations.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Jeneroux made a statement and answered questions.

Ms. Lindsay and Ms. Kelndorfer made statements and, together with Mr. Musgrave, answered questions.

At 5:36 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:38 p.m., the committee, pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), resumed in camera to consider a draft report.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, the committee continued its study of matters relating to social affairs, science and technology generally, as described in rule 12-7(9). (Topic: The implementation and success of a federal framework on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by the Government of Canada)

The committee considered a draft report.

It was agreed that the draft report as amended be adopted and that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be empowered to approve the final version of the report, taking into consideration this meeting's discussions, with any necessary editorial, grammatical and translation changes required and that the chair table the report in the Senate at the earliest opportunity.

At 5:54 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
