The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day at 7:03 p.m., in room B30, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Paul J. Massicotte, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Arnot, Galvez, Massicotte, McCallum, Sorensen and White (6).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Al Zaibak, McPhedran and Oudar (3).
Participating in the meeting: Jesse Good, Analyst, Library of Parliament.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 26, 2023, the committee began its examination of Bill C-226, An Act respecting the development of a national strategy to assess, prevent and address environmental racism and to advance environmental justice.
WITNESSES:
Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament, Saanich—Gulf Islands, sponsor of the bill;
The Honourable Senator Mary Jane McCallum, sponsor of the bill.
Environment and Climate Change Canada:
Heather McCready, Director General, Legislative and Regulatory Affairs;
Susan Martin, Director General, Strategic Policy Directorate;
Amanda Monforton, Director, Policy Development, Environmental Justice and Gender-based Analysis Plus.
Elizabeth May, the Honourable Senator McCallum and Amanda Monforton each made a statement and, together with Heather McCready and Susan Martin, answered questions.
At 8:11 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
