Pursuant to the order of the Senate of March 31, 2022, the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, and with videoconference at 2:03 p.m., the chair, the Honourable Tony Dean, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Boehm, Boisvenu, Dean and Yussuff (4).

Members of the committee present by videoconference: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Dagenais, Dasko, Deacon (Ontario), Mercer, Richards and Smith (7).

Participating in the meeting: Chantal Cardinal, Procedural Clerk, Sébastien Payet, Legislative Clerk, Lyne Héroux, Logistics Officer and Natacha Umugwaneza, Administrative Assistant, Committees Directorate; Ariel Shapiro and Anne‑Marie Therrien-Tremblay, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 10, 2022, the committee continued its study of issues relating to security and defence in the Arctic.

David Auerswald, Professor, National Security Strategy, U.S. National War College.

Paul Stronski made a statement.

At 2:15 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 2:17 p.m., the committee resumed.

Aurel Braun made a statement and, together with Paul Stronski, answered questions.

Mathieu Boulègue and David Auerswald each made a statement and answered questions.

At 3:58 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
