How do you feel about working at the Senate?
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working within the Real Property Planning Directorate. I had the privilege of working with a hardworking team who supported me through challenging projects and made for a comfortable work and learning environment.
What is the best thing about working at the Senate?
I really enjoyed working close to/on Parliament Hill and experiencing the environment where our country’s most important decision makers work. Working with the RPP I had the opportunity to gain a thorough appreciation for the heritage buildings within the parliamentary precinct and the amount of work that is required to maintain and restore Canada’s most prized national symbols. (Having an onsite gym is pretty great too!)
What has been your greatest contribution to date?
My greatest contribution during my term with the Senate has been the development of an Excel management accounting tool to manage funding for Long Term Vision and Planning projects. This tool is now used to create actual salary invoices for all directorates involved in LTVP projects. During this project I had the opportunity to work with people throughout the Senate Administration as well as with Public Works. I was also able to attend meetings on negotiations for long-term funding and on internal strategic planning.
What has the Senate given you?
I started my Co-op term with little knowledge of how the Senate functions, of the size of this institution, and of the hard working professionals that make up the Senate’s administration. In my time here, I have gained a good understanding of the Senate’s operations and the unique business practices of Parliament Hill. I have also learned a lot about the challenges of working in a political environment and the need for versatile and innovative leaders behind the scenes.
Would you consider the Senate as a potential employer following your studies? Why?
Yes, I would definitely consider the Senate as a potential employer when I am done my studies. The work atmosphere is comfortable and unique challenges provide a great sense of accomplishment.
