The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 8 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Diane F. Griffin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Black (Alberta), Black (Ontario), Dagenais, Deacon (Nova Scotia), Doyle, Griffin, Maltais, Mercer, Miville-Dechêne and Oh (10).

In attendance: Offah Obale, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 15, 2018, the committee continued its study on how the value-added food sector can be more competitive in global markets. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 47.)

WITNESSES:

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada:

Kathleen Donohue, Director General, Market Access Secretariat, International Affairs Branch;

Lynn Renaud, Director General, Business Development and Competitiveness Directorate, Programs Branch.

Canadian Trucking Alliance:

Stephen Laskowski, President.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Donohue and Ms. Renaud made statements and answered questions.

At 8:56 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:02 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Laskowski made a statement and answered questions.

At 9:51 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:54 a.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda (future business).

It was agreed:

That the committee undertake a study under its general order of reference pertaining to the restrictions on marketing whole wheat, whole grain and white bread in relation to the regulatory definition of Unhealthy Food for Children.

At 10:08 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
