The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met in camera this day at 10:31 a.m., in room 705, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Deacon, Dean, Eggleton, P.C., Mégie, Omidvar, Petitclerc, Poirier and Seidman (8).

In attendance: Shaila Anwar, Deputy Principal Clerk, Senate Committees Directorate; Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament, Ben Silverman, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, December 14, 2017, the committee continued its study on issues relating to social affairs, science and technology generally. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 35.)

Topic: Canada's post-war adoption mandate for unmarried mothers

Pursuant to rule 12-16(1)d), the committee considered a draft report.

It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room for the in camera portion of the meeting.

It was agreed to permit the recording and transcription of the in camera portion of the meeting, that one copy of the transcript be kept with the clerk for consultation purposes, and that the copy be destroyed at the end of the current parliamentary session.

It was agreed that the draft report be adopted as amended.

It was agreed that the steering committee be empowered to approve the final version, incorporating the changes agreed to today, along with the final design of the report.

It was agreed that the steering committee be empowered to make decisions on behalf of the committee to publicize the report with the support of the Senate Communications Directorate, including determining the appropriate timing for tabling the report.

It was agreed that the chair be authorized to table the report with the Clerk (or in the Senate).

It was agreed that the committee request a complete and detailed response from the government.

At 11:04 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
