Presentation of Reports from Standing or Special Committees

The Honourable Senator Nolin, Acting Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, presented its Eighth Report (Bill S-11, An Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act in order to add social condition as a prohibited ground of discrimination), with an amendment.

The Report was then read by one of the Clerks at the Table, as follows:

The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs has the honour to present its

Your Committee, to which was referred Bill S-11, An Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Acts in order to add social condition as a prohibited ground of discrimination, has, in obedience to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, March 17, 1998, examined the said Bill and now reports the same with the following amendment:

1. Page 2: Delete Clause 3.

The Honourable Senator Murray, P.C., Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology, presented its Ninth Report (Bill C-12, An Act to amend the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Superannuation Act) without amendment.

That the Senate urge the Government of Canada and the Department of Health in particular to take action to implement the following recommendations set out in the Final Report of the Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies, published in December 1993:

That the Federal Government establish a regulatory and licensing body, the National Reproductive Technologies Commission (NRTC), to oversee research, technologies and practices; and

That the National Reproductive Technologies Commission establish committees which would be responsible for regulating how services related to reproductive technologies are provided.
