Presentation of Reports from Standing or Special Committees

The Honourable Senator Sibbeston, Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples, presented its sixth report (Bill C-56, An Act to give effect to the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement and the Labrador Inuit Tax Treatment Agreement, without amendment).

The Honourable Senator Rompkey, P.C., moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Watt, that the bill be placed on the Orders of the Day for a third reading at the next sitting.

Introduction and First Reading of Senate Public Bills

The Honourable Senator Kinsella presented a Bill S-41, An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Act (human rights reports).

The bill was read the first time.

The Honourable Senator Kinsella moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Losier-Cool, that the bill be placed on the Orders of the Day for a second reading two days hence.

That the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs have power to sit at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2005, even though the Senate may then be sitting and that rule 95(4) be suspended in relation thereto.

Resuming debate on the motion of the Honourable Senator Rompkey, P.C., seconded by the Honourable Senator Losier-Cool, for the third reading of Bill S-31, An Act to authorize the construction and maintenance of a bridge over the St. Lawrence River and a bridge over the Beauharnois Canal for the purpose of completing Highway 30.

Ordered, That the Clerk do go down to the House of Commons and acquaint that House that the Senate has passed this bill, to which it desires its concurrence.

Third reading of Bill C-9, An Act to establish the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec.

The Honourable Senator Hervieux-Payette, P.C., moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Lapointe, that the bill be read the third time.

MOTIONS

The Honourable Senator Kirby moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Ferretti Barth:

That the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology be empowered, in accordance with rule 95(3)(a), to sit, on July 5 and 6, 2005, even though the Senate may then be adjourned for a period exceeding one week; and

That the Committee be authorized, notwithstanding rule 95(4), to sit on July 5 and 6, 2005, even though the Senate may be sitting.
