Thursday, June 14 – Senators Dennis Glen Patterson, Salma Ataullahjan and Thanh Hai Ngo meet with Dr. Lobsang Sangay following a joint informal meeting of the Senate Committee on Human Rights and the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Senators heard from Dr. Sangay, President of the Tibetan government-in-exile (officially known as the Central Tibetan Administration) and official envoy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to discuss the serious state of human rights and religious freedom in Tibet.
Thursday, June 14 – Senator Sarabjit S. Marwah welcomes Principal Rocco Coluccio, teachers, and the wonderful students from Etobicoke Ontario’s Islington Junior Middle School, to the Senate of Canada.
Wednesday, June 20 – Senator Rob Black meets Grade 8 students from Elora Public School in Wellington County, Ontario, during their visit to Parliament Hill. Senator Black attended Elora Public School when he was younger.
Thursday, June 21 – Senator Jim Munson has an uplifting visit from 15-year-old Vincent Lemieux from Montreal. Vincent brought along a self-made replica of Parliament’s Centre Block. He is a graduate of Montreal’s Summit School and part of the team at Spectrum Productions, which provides opportunities for youth and young adults on the Autism Spectrum through video and media production.
Saturday, June 23 – Senator Ratna Omidvar joins the families of Air India Flight 182 at Humber Bay Park East in Toronto, to remember those who perished on that date over the coast of Ireland.
Saturday, June 23 – To mark the 65th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, Senator Yonah Martin co-hosts a special commemorative ceremony and dinner on Parliament Hill in honour of Korean War Veterans.
Saturday, June 23 – Senator Salma Ataullahjan joins Rotary International’s Peace Building Summit in Toronto as part of their human rights panel. In the photo, from left to right, Senator Ataullahjan is joined by President of Rotary International Jennifer Jones, panel moderator Tiffany Gooch, co-panelist and former Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo Mimoza Kusari-Lila, and President and founder of Swat Relief Initiative Princess Zebu Jilani.
Sunday, June 24 – Senator Yvonne Boyer meets Rance Cardinal who, in support of Humboldt Strong, walked 1,200 km in 47 days from Sioux Lookout, Ontario to Humboldt, Saskatchewan. As a hockey player himself he wanted to do something to honour the victims and their families.
Saturday, June 30 – Senator Yvonne Boyer and Metis Bear (cousin to Spirit Bear) pay a visit to the Usher of the Black Rod, J. Greg Peters, to wish him a Happy Canada Day.
Sunday, July 1 – Senator Mobina S.B. Jaffer and the Royal Canadian Navy’s newest Honorary Captain, Queenie Choo, CEO of SUCCESS – one of the largest non-profit social service organizations in British Columbia, celebrate 151 years of Confederation onboard HMCS Calgary for a special Canada Day fireworks reception in North Vancouver.
Sunday, July 1 – Senator Rob Black shares a moment in Centre Wellington, Ontario, with Grace I-bu and Puni Tanapima, delegates from the Canada Youth program, from Taiwan. Senator Black flipped pancakes with Mayor Kelly Linton at the Firefighters’ Breakfast, participated in the Dominion Day Parade in Elora, Ontario, and enjoyed time with family and friends.
