Tuesday, December 14, 2021 – Senator Lucie Moncion participates in Newfoundland and Labrador’s French for the Future virtual forum. She joined French-speaking and French immersion students from across the province in a debate workshop on the subject of voting at 16, which gave participants the opportunity to hone their argumentative skills in French!
Monday, December 20, 2021 – Senators Mohamed-Iqbal Ravalia and Yuen Pau Woo meet with Queenie Choo, CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. – one of the largest, non-profit social service organizations in Canada. They discussed innovations in settlement services and the importance of culturally appropriate care for seniors.
Monday, December 27, 2021 – Senator Kim Pate speaks at the TUXIS Youth Parliament of Alberta – an annual event where a youth-run model government debates on current issues. Participants also attended workshops and heard from guest speakers from different professional fields. The 2021 event marked 40 years since young women could join the youth parliament.
Tuesday, January 11, 2022 – Senator Michèle Audette participates in Colloque de la diversité et l’inclusion – a symposium for teaching staff hosted by Cégep de Limoilou from January 11 to 14, 2022. Senator Audette was honoured to be the opening speaker on the symposium’s first day, which was devoted to the theme of better knowing and supporting Indigenous students.
Wednesday, January 12, 2022 – Senator Rob Black speaks virtually with Ms. Sandre’s Grade 5 class at École Immaculée-Conception School in Formosa, Ontario. Senator Black shared his journey to the Senate and answered students’ questions about government and the role of the Upper Chamber.
Thursday, January 13, 2022 – Senator Michèle Audette meets with members of the Réseau Jeunesse des Premières Nations Québec-Labrador to discuss legislation that relates to the organization’s interests and priorities. Senator Audette agreed to maintain recurring meetings with the organization to discuss important issues facing Indigenous communities.
Thursday, January 13, 2022 – Senator Bernadette Clement participates in a lecture series organized by the University of Ottawa, titled “Our Leaders in the City.” She spoke about her education at the University of Ottawa, what led her to municipal politics and the challenges she has faced throughout her career. The senator encouraged students to consider working in unique fields to expand their experience.
Thursday, January 13, 2022 – Senator Yvonne Boyer joins Dr. Unjali Malhotra, a specialist in women’s health based in British Columbia, in a presentation on the importance of informed consent in health care at the B.C. Women’s Hospital Grand Rounds.
Friday, January 14, 2022 – Senators Brian Francis, Percy Downe and Diane Griffin meet virtually with members of Special Olympics PEI to discuss the organization’s importance work.
Friday, January 14, 2022 – Senator Rosemary Moodie meets with Special Olympics Ontario to discuss its important programming and ways to ensure that the voices of Canadians with intellectual disabilities are present in discussions on health, equity and inclusion.
Tuesday and Wednesday, January 18-19, 2022 – Senators Kim Pate and Gwen Boniface join Grade 11 law students from Strathroy District Collegiate Institute in southwest Ontario to help prepare them for a summative mock trial. The senators tapped into their professional law expertise to provide students with tips and tricks on how to present evidence, question witnesses and organize arguments.
