Tuesday, May 23, 2023 – Senator Salma Ataullahjan meets with students at Whitney Junior Public School in Toronto, Ontario, who are learning about the federal government system and how Canada interacts with other countries. In this visit organized by SENgage, she touched on the role of the Senate in Parliament, what senators do and her own interests.

Wednesday, May 24, 2023 Senator Scott Tannas meets with Grade 11 social studies students at J.T Foster High School in Nanton, Alberta. During the session organized by SENgage, he explained to the class the role of the Senate within Parliament, described his role and responsibilities as a senator and shared some of his personal interests. Friday, May 26, 2023 Senator Yonah Martin meets with students at Prince of Wales Secondary School in Vancouver, British Columbia. During this visit organized by SENgage, the students in the Law Studies and Social Justice class learned about the senator’s life story, career and path to the Senate. They also learned how senators work on issues of equity, diversity and inclusion in Canadian society.

Friday, May 26, 2023 – Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard, centre, visits students at Central Kings Rural High School in Cambridge, Nova Scotia. During the visit, coordinated by SENgage, she met with students from Grade 6 to Grade 12, including students from the African Nova Scotian support program. She talked about her journey to the Senate and offered insights into her responsibilities as a senator. Senator Bernard also took time to answer questions from the students.

Friday, June 2, 2023 – Senator Lucie Moncion, back row, centre, meets with Grade 4 and Grade 5 students from Madeleine-De-Roybon Public Elementary School who made a special trip from Kingston, Ontario, to the Red Chamber. In the visit organized by SENgage, she taught the class about the Senate’s role in Parliament, how bills get passed and her work as a senator. She also devoted time to answering questions from the students.

Wednesday, June 7, 2023 – Senator Sabi Marwah, back row, fourth from left, hosts a reception in recognition of Deafblind Awareness Month in the Senate of Canada Building. The event was supported by Senator Yonah Martin, front row, right, the original co-sponsor for the motion recognizing June as Deafblind Awareness Month in 2015. Guests included members of the deafblind community, as well as senators Percy Mockler, Tony Loffreda, Brent Cotter, Elizabeth Marshall, and former senator Vim Kochhar.

Wednesday, June 7, 2023 Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard, front row, fourth from left, meets with British Columbia legislative interns at the Senate of Canada Building. During this visit organized by SENgage, the interns learned about the senator’s path to the Senate, and her interests in community organizing, activism and advocacy. They also learned how her time at the Senate has shaped her views.

Wednesday, June 7, 2023 Senator Rob Black joins a Grade 10 civics class from F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham, Ontario. In the session organized by SENgage, he talked about his work, responsibilities and contributions in the Senate. He explained why it’s important to advocate for rural communities and agriculture. Senator Black also answered questions from the students.

Saturday, June 10, 2023 Senator Michèle Audette, sixth from the left, meets with Toronto Metropolitan University’s Institute for Future Legislators who made the trip to Ottawa. The senator appeared as a witness in a simulated House of Commons Indigenous and Northern Affairs Committee meeting to discuss Bill C-29, the National Council for Reconciliation Act. During her testimony, Senator Audette shared her experience and perspective on the committee’s work and provided insights on Bill C-29. She also actively participated in the question-and-answer period.

Monday, June 12, 2023 Senator David M. Wells meets virtually with a Grade 10 civics class at F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham, Ontario. During the virtual visit organized by SENgage, he shared his journey to the Senate and what it was like when he got the call that he had been appointed. He shared insights about his role as a senator, his day-to-day work and his hobbies. He also answered questions from the students.

Tuesday, June 13, 2023 – Senator Pierre J. Dalphond, fifth from right, and Senator Marty Klyne, fourth from left, meet with Camille Labchuk, Executive Director of Animal Justice, centre; Kaitlyn Mitchell, a staff lawyer with Animal Justice, fourth from right; Barbara Cartwright, CEO of Humane Canada, right; and additional representatives of Canadian animal welfare organizations in the Senate of Canada Building. They celebrated the adoption of Bill S-5, the Strengthening Environmental Protection for a Healthier Canada Act, and the phasing out of toxicity tests on animals.

Thursday, June 15, 2023 Senator Nancy J. Hartling, back row, fifth from left, visits PRUDE Inc. in Saint John, New Brunswick, to meet with newcomers to Canada who have chosen that city as their home. During the visit, she described her journey to the Senate and her contributions to the Indigenous peoples and human rights committees. Senator Hartling shared her experiences working on social issues in New Brunswick. She also answered questions and listened to the participants’ stories.

The event, in support of World Sickle Cell Day, was attended by parliamentarians and key stakeholders including, from left, Mamoudou Camara, Kethlande Pierre, Biba Tinga, Anson St-Phat and Wilson Sanon.
