Speaker of the Senate

Visit of the Honourable Tom Osborne, Speaker of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly

On October 18, 2016, the Speaker of the Senate, the Honourable George J. Furey, Q.C., was joined by fellow Newfoundland and Labrador parliamentarians in welcoming the Honourable Tom Osborne, Speaker of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly, to the Parliament of Canada.

He shared the following words:

On behalf of the Senate of Canada, it is my absolute honour to welcome you all on the occasion of Speaker Osborne’s visit to Ottawa. As a proud Newfoundlander and Labradorian, it is always a great pleasure for me to welcome guests from my home province to Ottawa and I’d also like to take a moment to extend a warm welcome to my fellow parliamentarians. This is indeed a wonderful and unique opportunity for us all to come together.

On July 1st, we commemorated the hundredth anniversary of the tragic advance of the Newfoundland Regiment at Beaumont-Hamel. It is fitting that on this same day, all Canadians celebrate Canada Day, for without the sacrifices of the young men at Beaumont Hamel, and of all the young men and women who followed in this and every subsequent war, there may well have been no Canada to celebrate.I’d like to draw your attention to a painting that Newfoundland and Labrador artist, Grant Boland, has graciously offered to lend to the Senate of Canada. It is named “Beaumont Hamel” and it holds a very significant place in each of us.

With regard to his inspiration in creating this incredible work of art, Grant said:

“I thought, what if I took areas of our culture and history, and viewed them through an American lens: the Hollywood movie, in the dying art form of hand painted movie posters from the mid-century heyday? Maybe that mirror would reveal something different about us in its reflection.”

From our people, our culture and history, our landscapes and agriculture – our geography and generosity…let us use this opportunity to do just that…and reflect on all that makes Canada’s youngest province so beautiful – to Newfoundland and Labrador.
