The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day in Room 705, Victoria Building at 10:00 a.m., the Chairman, the Honourable Lowell Murray, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Comeau, Cook, Cools, Di Nino, Ferretti Barth, Johnstone, Lavoie-Roux, LeBreton, Maheu and Murray (10).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Nolin and Cohen (2).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Terrence Thomas and Margaret Young, Research Officers.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on March 19, 1998, the committee resumed consideration of Bill S-10, An Act to amend the Excise Tax Act (for complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 10, dated May 6, 1998).

Tony Valeri made a statement. Mr. Valeri was joined by Messrs Tierney and Marsland to answer questions.
The Honourable Senator Di Nino made a statement.
It was agreed that clause-by-clause be dispensed with.
The Honourable Senator LeBreton moved that Bill S-10 be reported without amendment.
Before entertaining the motion, the Chairman requested that the Clerk of the Committee conduct a roll call of the committee members.
The Clerk called the following as members of the committee: the Honourable Senators Callbeck, Comeau, Cook, Cools, Di Nino, Ferretti Barth, Graham, Johnstone, Kenny, LeBreton, Lynch-Staunton, Maheu, Murray and Phillips.
After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was agreed.
The committee suspended its sitting at 10:45 a.m.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 5, 1997, the committee resumed consideration of the implementation and application of Chapter 1, An Act to amend the Divorce Act, the Family Orders and Agreements Enforcement Assistance Act, the Garnishment, Attachment and Pension Diversion Act and the Canada Shipping Act, and the associated Federal Child Support Guidelines (for complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 3, dated December 16, 1997).
At 10:47 a.m., the committee resumed sitting in camera for the purpose of discussing a draft report.
The Honourable Senator Senator Lavoie-Roux was reintroduced as a committee member and the Honourable Senator Comeau was removed.
At 11:30 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on April 30, 1998, the committee began its consideration of Bill C-12, An Act to amend the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Superannuation Act (for complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 13, dated June 2, 1998 ).

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Maheu that Bill C-12 be reported without amendment.
After discussion, the question being put on the motion, it was agreed.
At 3:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
