The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day in Room 705, Victoria Building at 2:00 p.m., the Chairman, the Honourable Lowell Murray, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beaudoin, Chalifoux, Cools, Fitzpatrick, Johnstone, Kenny, Kinsella, LeBreton, Maheu and Murray, P.C. (10).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, June 8, 1998, the committee resumed its consideration of Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (Part 1) and the Corporations and Labour Unions Returns Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts (for complete text of Order of Reference see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 14, dated June 9, 1998).

F. A. Pasacreta, Vice-President -- Operations, British Columbia Maritime Employers Association.

From the NWT Chamber of Mines:

Doug Willy, President.

Mr. Guest made a statement and was joined by Mr. Mackay to answer questions.

Mr. Chipeur made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Chipeur deposited a document with the Clerk of the Committee entitled "Submissions by CALL/ACAMS to the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology on Bill C-19 (An Act to Amend the Canada Labour Code -- Part 1), June 16, 1998, Ottawa" as Exhibit No. 5900 S2/C-19, 15 "6".

Mr. Lampert made a statement. Mr. Lampert was joined by Mr. McEwan and Mr. Pasacreta to answer questions.

The British Council of British Columbia deposited with the Clerk of the Committee a document entitled "Industrial Relations Bulletin, Executive Comment, Vol. 30, No. 05, May 14, 1998" as Exhibit No. 5900 S2/C-19, 15 "7".

Doug Willy made a statement and answered questions.

At 3:45 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day in Room 705, Victoria Building at 4:00 p.m., in camera, the Chairman, the Honourable Lowell Murray, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cohen, Ferretti Barth, Johnstone, Kenny, LeBreton and Murray. P.C. (6).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on November 5, 1997, the committee resumed consideration of the implementation and application of Chapter 1, An Act to amend the Divorce Act, the Family Orders and Agreements Enforcement Assistance Act, the Garnishment, Attachment and Pension Diversion Act and the Canada Shipping Act, and the associated Federal Child Support Guidelines (for complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 3, dated December 16, 1997).

The Honourable Senator LeBreton moved -- That the Chairman be given authority to deposit the interim report with the Clerk of the Senate over the summer.

The question being put to the motion, it was agreed.

It was agreed that a press release would be issued once the interim report was tabled in the Senate.

At 5:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
