The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 9 a.m., this day, in the Tea Room of the Radisson Plaza Hotel Saskatchewan Regina, the Honourable Wilbert J. Keon, Deputy Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Keon (2).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Howard Chodos, Analyst, Political and Social Affairs Division

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 7, 2004, the committee continued its examination on the state of the health care system in Canada, in particular issues concerning mental health and mental illness. (See Issue No. 1, Wednesday, October 20, 2004, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

Schizophrenia Society of Saskatchewan:

Thomas Bartram, Member;

Carol Solberg, Executive Director.

Depression and Manic Depression Support Group of Regina:

Frank Dyck.

Saskatchewan Families for Effective Autism Treatment:

Lisa Simmermon, Public Relations Director.

Mental Health and Addictions Advisory Committee, Five Hills Health Region:

Darrell Downton Co-Chair;

Les Gray, Co-Chair;

Anne-Marie Ursan, Manager, Rehabilitation Services.

Thomas Bartram, Carol Solberg, Frank Dyck and Lisa Simmermon each made a statement. Together the witnesses answered questions.

At 10:35 a.m. the committee suspended its sitting.

At 10:45 a.m. the committee resumed its sitting.

Darrell Downton, Les Gray, and Anne-Marie Ursan each made a statement. Together the witnesses answered questions.

At 11:41 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
