The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, at 5:20 p.m., the Chair, the Honourable Tommy Banks, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Banks, Cochrane, Kenny, Milne, Sibbeston and Tardif (7).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Sam Banks and Lynne Myers.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, the committee continued its review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (1999, c. 33) pursuant to section 343(1) of the said act. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

Sierra Legal Defence Fund:

Hugh Wilkins, Staff Lawyer.

Pollution Watch:

Dr. Kapil Khatter, Director of Health and Environment.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Wilkins and Dr. Khatter each made a presentation and answered questions.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 7:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
