Proceedings of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs

Issue 4 - Evidence - March 26, 2007

OTTAWA, Monday, March 26, 2007

The Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day at 3:30 p.m. to elect a chairman.

Senator Joseph A. Day (Deputy Chairman) in the chair.

[English]

The Deputy Chairman: I call this meeting to order as deputy chair and acting chair of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs, a subcommittee of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence.

I hereby tender my resignation as deputy chair of this committee. I enjoyed serving as deputy chair, and it hurts me deeply to have to do this.

Senator Kenny: Did you say that you are leaving the committee?

The Deputy Chairman: It will be up to the committee to determine whether I should stay.

I will now turn the meeting over to our clerk, Ms. Keli Hogan.

Keli Hogan, Clerk of the Committee: Honourable senators, as clerk of the subcommittee, it is my duty to preside over the election of a chairman, and I am ready to receive motions to that effect.

Senator Atkins: I move that Senator Day be the new chairman of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs.

Ms. Hogan: Are there any other nominations?

Senator Zimmer: I move that the nominations close.

Ms. Hogan: I invite Senator Day to take the chair.

Senator Joseph A. Day (Chairman) in the chair.

The Chairman: Honourable senators, I thank you for your continued support acting on your behalf as Chair of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs.

It would be appropriate receiving nominations for the position of deputy chairman.

Senator Kenny: I nominate Senator Atkins for the position of deputy chairman.

The Chairman: Are there any other nominations? Hearing none, I declare Senator Atkins the new Deputy Chairman of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs.

Senator Atkins: Will we get along?

The Chairman: Absolutely.

Are there any other questions?

Senator Atkins: Who comprises the full committee now?

The Chairman: There are three of us. There were four, but one was removed from our parent committee. Under the Senate rules, a senator must serve on a parent committee to serve on a subcommittee.

Senator Kenny: At the next meeting of the full committee we will examine the membership of the subcommittee.

Mr. Chairman, my understanding is that we need to get a budget in shortly. In your capacity as chair, will you be able to do that today? My understanding is that the budget subcommittee will be reviewing budgets as soon as next Wednesday.

The Chairman: Three weeks ago, as your deputy chair, I took the liberty of submitting a budget that had been approved by the overall committee. It has been submitted to the Internal Economy Committee but has not been acted upon. It has been there for three weeks.

Senator Kenny: I move adjournment.

The Chairman: All those in favour?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The committee adjourned.
