The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 7:02 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Mahovlich, Mercer, Peterson and Segal (7).

In attendance: Frédéric Forge, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the committee continued its consideration of the present state and future of agriculture and forestry in Canada. (For complete text of order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Health Canada:

Siddika Mithani, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Products and Food Branch;

Ian Alexander, Acting Director General, Veterinary Drugs Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch.

Canadian Food Inspection Agency:

Paul Mayers, Acting Associate Vice-President, Programs;

Glyn Chancey, Acting Executive Director, Plant Products Directorate.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Mayers and Ms. Mithani each made a statement and, together with Dr. Alexander and Mr. Chancey, answered questions.

At 8:34 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Gustafson, Mahovlich, Mercer and Peterson (5).
