The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:19 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Braley, Callbeck, Champagne, P.C., Cordy, Demers, Eaton, Eggleton, P.C., Martin, Merchant, Ogilvie and Seidman (11).
In attendance: Brian O'Neal and Brian Hermon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 18, 2010, the committee continued its study on current social issues pertaining to Canada's largest cities. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 18)

John Reilly, Senior Consultant, Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
As individuals:
Zheng Wu, Professor of Sociology, University of Victoria;
Stéphanie Gaudet, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Ottawa.
Mr. Reilly, Ms. Gaudet and Mr. Wu each made a statement and, together, answered questions.
At 6:05 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 6:07 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda.
It was agreed that the chair be authorized to seek authority from the Senate for the following order of reference:
That, pursuant to Section 25.9 of the Federal-Provincial Fiscal Arrangements Act, the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology be authorized to examine and report on the progress in implementing the 2004 10-Year Plan to Strengthen Health Care; and,
That the committee submit its final report no later than October 31, 2011, and that the committee retain all powers necessary to publicize its findings until 180 days after the tabling of the final report.
At 6:24 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
