The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:17 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Braley, Callbeck, Champagne, P.C., Cordy, Demers, Dyck, Eggleton, P.C., Martin, Merchant, Ogilvie and Seidman (11).

In attendance: Brian O'Neal and Brian Hermon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 18, 2010, the committee continued its study on current social issues pertaining to Canada's largest cities. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 18.)

WITNESSES:

Indian and Northern Affairs Canada:

Allan MacDonald, Director General, Office of the Federal Interlocutor;

Denis Carignan, Director, Office of the Federal Interlocutor, Saskatchewan.

Statistics Canada:

Jane Badets, Director General, Census Subject Matter, Social and Demographic Statistics Branch;

Cathy Connors, Assistant Director, Social and Aboriginal Statistics.

Métis National Council:

David Chartrand, Vice-President.

Congress of Aboriginal Peoples:

Betty Ann Lavallée, National Chief;

Randy Martin, National Bilateral Director.

Assembly of First Nations:

Rick Simon, Regional Chief, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Badets and Mr. MacDonald each made statements and, together with Mr. Carignan and Ms. Connors, answered questions.

At 5:15 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:19 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Chartrand, Ms. Lavallée and Mr. Simon each made a statement and, together with Mr. Martin, answered questions.

At 6:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
