The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:16 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cordy, Demers, Eaton, Eggleton, P.C., Martin, Ogilvie, Seidman, Seth and Verner, P.C. (10).

In attendance: Brian O'Neal, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 17, 2011, the committee began its study on social inclusion and cohesion in Canada.

WITNESSES:

Congress of Aboriginal Peoples:

Jerry Peltier, National Advisor;

Dwight Dorey, National Vice Chief;

Angela Mojak, National ASETS Advisor.

National Association of Friendship Centres:

Jeffrey Cyr, Executive Director.

City of Edmonton:

Leona Carter, Director, Aboriginal Relations Office, Community Services.

Saskatoon Tribal Council:

Larry Cachene, Chief, Yellow Quill First Nation.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Dorey made a statement and, together with Mr. Peltier and Ms. Mojak, answered questions.

At 5:13 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:17 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Cachene, Mr. Cyr and Ms. Carter and each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 6:16 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
