The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 6:51 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Dennis Glen Patterson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Baker, P.C., Beyak, Dyck, Lovelace Nicholas, Meredith, Moore, Ngo, Patterson, Raine, Tannas and Wallace (11).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Watt (1).

In attendance: Norah Kielland and Martha Butler, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, the committee continued its consideration of Bill C-25, An Act respecting the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation Band Order.

WITNESSES:

Pauline Tessier;

Helen Darrigan.

Mi'kmaq First Nations Assembly of Newfoundland:

Jaimie Lickers, Counsel.

It was agreed to distribute the English-only speaking notes and briefs of Jamie Lickers and Helen Darrigan.

Ms. Lickers made a statement.

Ms. Tessier made a statement.

Ms. Darrigan made a statement.

At 7:47 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:20 p.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Lickers, Ms. Darrigan and Ms. Tessier answered questions.

At 9:30 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
