The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day, at 5 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Mobina S. B. Jaffer, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Eggleton, P.C., Fortin-Duplessis, Hubley, Jaffer, Marshall, Martin, Ngo, Seidman and Unger (10).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk and Smith, P.C. (Cobourg) (2).
In attendance: Julia Nicol and Shauna Troniak, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, the committee began its study Bill C-266, An Act to establish Pope John Paul II Day.
WITNESS:
Wladyslaw Lizon, M.P. for Mississauga East–Cooksville, sponsor of the bill.
The chair made an opening statement.
Mr. Lizon made a statement and answered questions.
It was agreed that the committee proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-266, An Act to establish Pope John Paul II Day.
It was agreed that the title stand postponed.
It was agreed that the preamble stand postponed.
It was agreed that clause 1, which contains the short title, stand postponed.
It was agreed that clause 2 carry, on division.
It was agreed that clause 3 carry, on division.
It was agreed that clause 1, which contains the short title, carry.
It was agreed that the preamble carry.
It was agreed that the title carry.
It was agreed that the bill carry, on division.
It was agreed that Bill C-266 be reported to the Senate.
At 5:10 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 5:30 p.m., the committee resumed.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, the committee continued its study to monitor issues relating to human rights and, inter alia, to review the machinery of government dealing with Canada's international and national human rights obligations. Mr. Rahman, Ms. Stewart and Ms. Mukherjee-Reed each made a statement and answered questions.
At 7:43 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
