The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:29 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Cordy, Eaton, Eggleton, P.C., Enverga, Nancy Ruth, Ogilvie, Seidman, Seth and Stewart Olsen (10).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, the committee continued its study on prescription pharmaceuticals in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 3.)

WITNESSES:

Health Canada:

Dr. Supriya Sharma, Acting Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Products and Food Branch;

Robin Chiponski, Director General, Health Products and Food Branch Inspectorate.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research:

Dr. Jane Aubin, Executive Vice-President, Chief Scientific Officer;

Dr. Robert Peterson, Executive Director, Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network.

Public Health Agency of Canada:

Dr. Theresa Tam, Branch Head, Health Security Infrastructure Canada.

The chair made a statement.

Dr. Sharma and Dr. Aubin each made a statement and, together with Ms. Chiponski, Dr. Peterson and Dr. Tam, answered questions.

At 12:27 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
