The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met this day at 10:35 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Campbell, Enverga, Greene, Lang, Ringuette, Smith and Tkachuk (7).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Wallin (1).

In attendance: Brett Capstick and Michaël Lambert-Racine, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

The clerk informed the committee of the unavoidable absences of the chair and deputy chair and presided over the election of an acting chair.

The Honourable Senator Ringuette moved:

That the Honourable Senator Greene be the acting chair.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The acting chair took the chair.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, the committee continued its study and report on the development of a national corridor in Canada as a means of enhancing and facilitating commerce and internal trade (For the complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 8.)

WITNESSES:

Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada:

Sheilagh Murphy, Assistant Deputy Minister, Lands and Economic Development;

Bruno Steinke, Director, Consultation and Accommodation Unit.

As an individual:

Honorary Lieutenant-General Richard Rohmer, Canadian Armed Forces.

The acting chair made a statement.

Ms. Murphy made a statement and, together with Mr. Steinke, answered questions.

At 10:41 a.m., the chair, the Honourable Senator Tkachuk, took the chair.

At 11:11 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:14 a.m., the committee resumed.

The chair made a statement.

It was agreed that the draft interim report on copyright be sent to the Communications Directorate.

Mr. Rohmer made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:54 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
