The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:13 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cordy, Dyck, Eaton, Eggleton, P.C., Enverga, Martin, Ogilvie, Seidman and Seth (9).
In attendance: Sonya Norris and Martha Butler, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; and Ceri Au, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, the committee began its study on Bill S-202, An Act to establish and maintain a national registry of medical devices.
WITNESSES:
The Honourable Senator Mac Harb, sponsor of the bill.
Canadian Nurses Association:
Karima Velji, President-elect;
Sandra Lauck, Clinical Nurse Specialist.
Techna Institute/University Health Network:
Dr. David Urbach, Division of General Surgery, Toronto General Hospital (by video conference);
Dr. Tony Easty, Design and Engineering Health (by video conference).
Health Canada:
Barbara Sabourin, Director General, Therapeutic Products Directorate, HPFB.
The chair made a statement.
Senator Harb made a statement and answered questions.
At 4:50 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 4:54 p.m., the committee resumed.
Ms. Velji and Dr. Easty each made a statement and, together with Dr. Urbach, Ms. Lauck and Ms. Sabourin, answered questions.
At 6:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
