The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:14 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cordy, Dyck, Eaton, Eggleton, P.C., Enverga, Martin, Ogilvie, Seidman, Seth and Verner, P.C. (10).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 28, 2013, the committee began its study of the subject matter on Bill C-314, An Act respecting the awareness of screening among women with dense breast tissue.

WITNESSES:

Public Health Agency of Canada:

Kimberly Elmslie, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Branch.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research:

Morag Park, Scientific Director, Institute of Cancer Research.

Health Canada:

Dr. John Patrick Stewart, Interim Senior Executive Director, Therapeutic Products Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Elmslie and Ms. Park each made a statement and, together with Dr. Stewart, answered questions.

At 5:43 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
