The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 2:14 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Cordy, Eaton, Eggleton, P.C., Enverga, Ogilvie and Seidman (7).

In attendance: Sonya Norris and Julie Béchard, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, the committee began to examine the subject matter of Bill C-24, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.

WITNESSES:

Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers:

Lorne Waldman, President.

As individuals:

Richard Kurland, Lawyer and Policy Analyst;

Julie Taub, Immigration and Refugee Lawyer, former member of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.

Canadian Council for Refugees:

Loly Rico, President;

Janet Dench, Executive Director.

Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants:

Debbie Douglas, Executive Director.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Waldman and Mr. Edelmann each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 3:11 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 3:13 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Kurland and Ms. Taub each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 3:57 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 4:03 p.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Douglas, Ms. Rico and Ms. Dench each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 5:02 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
