The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day at 11:30 a.m., in room B30, Senate of Canada Building.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Boyer, LaBoucane-Benson, Moncion, Pate and Wells (5).

In attendance: Jean-Philippe Duguay and Alexandra Smith, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament; and Síofra McAllister, Communications Officer, Senate Communications Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, September 20, 2018, the committee continued to examine and monitor issues relating to human rights and, inter alia, to review the machinery of government dealing with Canada's international and national human rights obligations. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 34.)

WITNESSES:

Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada:

Anne Curley, Vice President.

Native Women's Association of Canada:

Francyne Joe, President.

Virginia Lomax, Legal Counsel.

Women of the Métis Nation:

Melanie Omeniho, President.

The clerk of the committee informed the committee of the absences of the chair and the deputy chairs, and presided over the election of an acting chair.

The Honourable Senator Boyer moved:

That the Hounourable Senator Pate be the acting chair.

The question being put on motion, it was adopted.

The acting chair took the chair.

The acting chair made a statement.

Ms. Joe made a statement, and together with Ms. Lomax, answered questions.

Ms. Omeniho made a statement and answered questions.

Ms. Curley made a statement and answered questions.

At 1:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
