The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 9 a.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Robert Black, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Black, Cotter, Duncan, Klyne, Marwah, Mockler, Oh, Petitclerc and Simons (9).

Participating in the meeting: Offah Obale, Analyst, Library of Parliament; and Ben Silverman, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, the committee continued its study on the status of soil health in Canada.

WITNESSES (by videoconference):

As individuals:

David Burton, Distinguished Research Professor, Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University;

Brandon Heung, Associate Professor, Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University;

Derek Lynch, Professor, Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University.

David Burton, Brandon Heung and Derek Lynch each made a statement and answered questions.

At 9:59 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10 a.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda (future business).

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 10, 2022, the committee continued its study on issues relating to agriculture and forestry generally. (Topic: The British Columbia flood and recovery efforts)

It was agreed that the committee be authorized to request a complete and detailed response from the government on its report.

It was agreed that the committee report and press release be released to certain members of the press, under embargo, as recommended by the Communications Directorate.

At 11 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
