The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 9:01 a.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Paula Simons, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bellemare, Burey, Cotter, Jaffer, McNair, Oh, Petitclerc and Simons (8).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator McBean (1).

Participating in the meeting: Joanne Markle LaMontagne, Analyst, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, the committee continued its study of the status of soil health in Canada.

Daniel Alessi, Professor and Encana Chair in Water Resources, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Alberta;

Gordon Price, Professor, Department of Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University (by videoconference);

Subhasis Ghoshal, Professor, Civil Engineering and Director, Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design, McGill University;

Francis Zvomuya, Professor, Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, University of Manitoba.

Daniel Alessi and Gordon Price each made a statement and answered questions.

At 10 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:03 a.m., the committee resumed.

Subhasis Ghoshal and Francis Zvomuya each made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:57 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
