The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 9:01 a.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Robert Black, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Black, Burey, Jaffer, McBean, McNair, Oh, Robinson and Simons (8).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Pate (1).
Participating in the meeting: Joanne Markle LaMontagne, Analyst, Library of Parliament.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 9, 2024, the committee began its examination of Bill C-275, An Act to amend the Health of Animals Act (biosecurity on farms).
WITNESSES:
John Barlow, Member of Parliament for Foothills, sponsor of the bill.
Canadian Cattle Association:
Matthew Atkinson, President, Manitoba Beef Producers;
Ryder Lee, General Manager (by videoconference).
Canadian Meat Council:
Lauren Martin, Senior Director, Government Relations and Policy.
John Barlow made a statement and answered questions.
At 9:57 a.m., the committee suspended.
At 10:01 a.m., the committee resumed.
Matthew Atkinson and Lauren Martin each made a statement and, together with Ryder Lee, answered questions.
At 10:43 a.m., the committee suspended.
At 10:45 a.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee proceeded in camera to discuss a draft agenda (future business).
At 10:55 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
