The Standing Senate Committee on Indigenous Peoples met this day at 9 a.m., in room C128, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Brian Francis, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Arnot, Busson, Coyle, Francis, Hartling, Sorensen and Tannas (7).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Audette and McCallum (2).

Participating in the meeting: Sara Fryer, analyst, Library of Parliament

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 4, 2023, the committee continued its examination of Bill C-29, An Act to provide for the establishment of a national council for reconciliation.

WITNESSES:

Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business:

Matthew Foss, Vice President, Research & Public Policy.

Métis Nation Saskatchewan:

Michelle LeClair, Vice President.

Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs Secretariat:

John G. Paul, Executive Director (by videoconference);

Shelley Sabattis, Chief, Oromocto First Nation (by videoconference).

Athabasca Tribal Council:

Karla Buffalo, Chief Executive Officer (by videoconference).

As an individual:

Marcia Anderson, Vice-Dean, Indigenous Health, Social Justice and Anti-Racism, University of Manitoba.

Marcia Anderson, Matthew Foss and Michelle LeClair each made a statement and answered questions.

At 9:57 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:06 a.m., the committee resumed.

Chief Shelley Sabattis and Karla Buffalo each made a statement and, together John G. Paul, answered questions.

At 10:44 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
