The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Commerce and the Economy met this day at 11:30 a.m., in room B30, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Pamela Wallin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cardozo, Deacon (Nova Scotia), Duncan, Gignac, Loffreda, Marshall, Marwah, Massicotte, Ringuette, Smith and Wallin (11).

Participating in the meeting: Mehrab Kiarsi and Adriane Yong, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, December 16, 2021, the committee continued its study of matters relating to banking, trade and commerce generally.

Simon Kennedy, Deputy Minister;

Charles Vincent, Assistant Deputy Minister, Small Business and Marketplace Services Sector;

Mark Schaan, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic and Innovation Policy Sector.

Department of Finance Canada:

Michael Sabia, Deputy Minister;

Rhys Mendes, Assistant Deputy Minister, Economic Policy Branch.

Simon Kennedy made a statement and together with Charles Vincent and Mark Schaan answered questions.

At 12:30 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:32 p.m., the committee resumed.

Michael Sabia and Rhys Mendes answered questions.

At 1:31 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
