The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Commerce and the Economy met this day at 4:15 p.m., in room W110, 1 Wellington St., the chair, the Honourable Pamela Wallin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bellemare, Deacon (Nova Scotia), Gignac, Loffreda, Marshall, Massicotte, Miville-Dechêne, Petten, Ringuette, Wallin and Yussuff (11).

Participating in the meeting: Brett Howard and Adriane Yong, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, the committee began its consideration of Bill C-42, An Act to amend the Canada Business Corporations Act and to make consequential and related amendments to other Acts.

WITNESSES:

Publish What You Pay-Canada:

Sasha Caldera, Campaign Manager, Beneficial Ownership Transparency.

Canadians for Tax Fairness:

DT Cochrane, Economist.

As an individual:

Jon Allen, Former Board Director, Transparency International Canada (by videoconference).

Sasha Caldera, DT Cochrane and Jon Allen, each made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:40 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:43 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to discuss a draft agenda (future business).

At 6:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
