The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day at 9:15 a.m., in room C128, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Rosa Galvez, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Arnot, Galvez, Gignac, Massicotte, McCallum, Miville-Dechêne, Sorensen, Verner, P.C. and Wells (10).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator White (1).

Participating in the meeting: Raymond St-Martin, Procedural Clerk, Committees Directorate; Joëlle Malo, Analyst, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 8, 2023, the committee continued its examination of Bill S-234, An Act to amend the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (final disposal of plastic waste).

Heather McCready, Director General, Legislative and Regulatory Affairs;

Dany Drouin, Director General, Plastics and Waste Management Directorate;

Tanya Smyth-Monteiro, Manager, Waste Programs;

Hannah Rogers, Director General, Environmental Enforcement.

Indigenous Services Canada:

Tonina Simeone, Acting Director General, Lands and Environmental Management Branch, Lands and Economic Development.

Dany Drouin made a statement and, together with Heather McCready, Hannah Rogers and Tonina Simeone, answered questions.
