The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs met this day at 11:32 a.m., in room B30, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Brent Cotter, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Audette, Batters, Clement, Cotter, Dalphond, Oudar, Pate, Prosper, Ross, Simons and Wells (Newfoundland and Labrador) (11).
Participating in the meeting: Michaela Keenan-Pelletier, Analyst, Library of Parliament.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 30, 2024, the committee began its consideration of Bill C-321, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (assaults against persons who provide health services and first responders).
WITNESSES:
Todd Doherty, Member of Parliament, Cariboo—Prince George, British Columbia, sponsor of the bill.
International Association of Firefighters:
Paul Hills, President, Saskatoon Paramedic Association.
Ontario Nurses’ Association:
Erin Ariss, Registered Nurse, Provincial President;
Andrea Kay, Registered Nurse, Chief Executive Officer.
Todd Doherty made a statement and answered questions.
At 12:35 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 12:41 p.m., the committee resumed.
Paul Hills and Erin Ariss each made a statement and, together with Andrea Kay, answered questions.
At 1:36 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
