The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs met this day at 11:45 a.m., in room B30, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Mobina S. B. Jaffer, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Batters, Boyer, Carignan, P.C., Cotter, Dalphond, Jaffer, Klyne, Pate, Petitclerc, Simons and Tannas (11).

Participating in the meeting: Aoife Mc Donald, Administrative Assistant, Committees Directorate; Michaela Keenan-Pelletier and Iryna Zazulya, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 3, 2022, the committee continued its consideration of Bill S-230, An Act to amend the Corrections and Conditional Release Act.

The chair presided over the election of the deputy chair.

The Honourable Senator Tannas moved that the Honourable Senator Batters be deputy chair of the committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The Honourable Senator Pate moved that the committee proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill S-230.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was adopted on the following vote:

The Honourable Senator Tannas moved that the chair request that the Parliamentary Budget Officer provide a cost estimate regarding the implementation of the new elements contained within Bill S-230 and seek advice from the Table Officers regarding Royal Recommendations as quickly as possible.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was adopted, on division.

At 12:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
