The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 9:19 a.m. NT, in Salon A, Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland, the chair, the Honourable Fabian Manning, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Busson, Cordy, Duncan, Francis, Manning, McPhedran, Patterson (Ontario) and Quinn (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Petten (1).

Participating in the meeting: Daniele Lafrance, Analyst, Library of Parliament and Ben Silverman, Communications Officer, Communications, Broadcasting and Publications Directorate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the committee continued its examination of Canada’s seal populations and seal harvest.

WITNESSES:

Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture of Newfoundland and Labrador:

Lorelei Roberts, Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries and Aquaculture Branch.

FFAW-Unifor:

Greg Pretty, President.

As an individual:

Keith Bath, Commercial Fisher and Seal Harvester.

It was agreed that the committee allow electronic and photographic media coverage of its public meetings today in St. John’s, with as little disruption to the meeting as possible.

Lorelei Roberts, Greg Pretty and Keith Bath each made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:52 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
