Pursuant to the order of the Senate of May 5, 2022, the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day in room B30, Senate of Canada Building, and with videoconference, at 5:02 p.m. ET, the chair, the Honourable Salma Ataullahjan, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Boyer, Dawson, Gerba and Jaffer (5).

Members of the committee present by videoconference: The Honourable Senators Audette and Omidvar (2).

Participating in the meeting: Barbara Reynolds, Procedural Clerk, Martine Willox, Legislative Clerk and Marc-André Lanthier, Administrative Assistant, Committees Directorate; Robert Mason and Brendan Naef, analysts, Library of Parliament; Ben Silverman, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 3, 2022, the committee continued its study of such issues as may arise from time to time relating to human rights generally. (Topic: Islamophobia in Canada)

Jasmin Zine, Anver Emon, Mohammed Hashim and Amira Elghawaby each made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:56 p.m., pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 3, 2022, the committee continued its study of such issues as may arise from time to time relating to human rights generally. (Topic: Forced and Coerced Sterilization of persons in Canada)

It was agreed that the following special study supplementary budget application for the study on issues relating to human rights generally, for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023, be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:
