The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 11:30 a.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Ratna Omidvar, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bernard, Burey, Cordy, Cormier, Dasko, McBean, Omidvar, Osler, Petitclerc, Seidman and Yussuff (11).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Mégie (1).

Participating in the meeting: Laura Blackmore, Analyst, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 23, 2024, the committee continued its consideration of Bill C-50, An Act respecting accountability, transparency and engagement to support the creation of sustainable jobs for workers and economic growth in a net-zero economy.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, P.C., M.P, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

WITNESSES:

Natural Resources Canada:

Christina Paradiso, Director General, Energy Policy Branch;

Cori Anderson, Director, Sustainable Jobs.

Department of Justice Canada:

Barbara Winters, Legal Counsel.

Employment and Social Development Canada:

Eva Lazar, Executive Director, Special Projects, Skills and Employment Branch.

The Minister made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:28 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:32 p.m., the committee resumed.

Cori Anderson and Eva Lazar answered questions.

At 1:18 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 1:19 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft

agenda (future business).

It was agreed that senators’ staff be permitted to remain in the room during the in camera portion of the meeting.

It was agreed that the committee allow the audio recording of the in camera portion of today’s meeting, that one copy be kept with the clerk of the committee for consultation by committee members and/or staff, and that the audio recording be destroyed by the clerk when authorized to do so by the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, but no later than at the end of this parliamentary session.

At 1:26 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
