The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:15 p.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Ratna Omidvar, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bernard, Cordy, Cormier, Dagenais, Dasko, Forest, Mégie, Moodie, Omidvar, Osler and Seidman (11).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Al Zaibak, Muggli and Petitclerc (3).

Participating in the meeting: Mayra Perez-Leclerc and Diana Ambrozas, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 9, 2024, the committee began its consideration of Bill C-232, An Act respecting Arab Heritage Month.

WITNESS:

The Honourable David McGuinty, P.C., M.P., sponsor of the bill.

The Honourable David McGuinty, P.C., made a statement and answered questions.

It was agreed that the committee proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-232.

It was agreed that the title stand postponed.

It was agreed that the preamble stand postponed.

It was agreed that clause 1, which contains the short title, stand postponed.

It was agreed that clause 2 carry.

It was agreed that clause 1, which contains the short title, carry.

It was agreed that the preamble carry.

It was agreed that the title carry.

It was agreed that the bill carry.

It was agreed that the chair report Bill C-232, without amendment, to the Senate in both official languages.

At 4:56 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5 p.m., the committee resumed.

At 5 p.m., pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, the committee began its consideration of Bill C-284, An Act to establish a national strategy for eye care.
