The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 11:30 a.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bernard, Boudreau, Burey, Cormier, Dagenais, Dasko, Mégie and Petitclerc (8).

Participating in the meeting: Mayra Perez-Leclerc and Diana Ambrozas, analysts, Library of Parliament.

The clerk informed the committee of the unavoidable absences of the chair and deputy chair and presided over the election of an acting chair.

The Honourable Senator Dasko moved that the Honourable Senator Peticlerc be the acting chair.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The acting chair took the chair.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 30, 2024, the committee began its consideration of Bill C-252, An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (prohibition of food and beverage marketing directed at children).

WITNESSES:

Patricia Lattanzio, Member of Parliament for Saint-Léonard—Saint-Michel, sponsor of the bill.

Health Canada:

Joyce Boye, Director General, Food and Nutrition Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch;

Alfred Aziz, Director, Bureau of Nutritional Sciences, Food and Nutrition Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch;

David K. Lee, Chief Regulatory Officer, Health Products and Food Branch.

Patricia Lattanzio made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:22 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:26 p.m., the committee resumed.

Joyce Boye made a statement and, together with Alfred Aziz and David K. Lee, answered questions.

At 1:12 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
